“Pathways From Settler Colonialism to Right Relationship & Indigenous Sovereignty”

a 90 minute presentation or 3 hour workshop

Tsimka and I create a welcoming, compassionate, and honest container where we look at the historic processes and present day conditions that brought us to this moment, and what we can do, individually and collectively, to work toward a more loving and just world.

Often non-Indigenous people can find conversations and learning about colonization and settler colonialism to be intimidating. It can bring up a lot of fear and sometimes shame, but it doesn’t have to. By looking at the processes that got us to now we can move from confusion and avoidance to clarity, connection, responsibility, and action. Read some of our recommendations and get to know more about our workshop below. If you’re curious, we’d love to work with you.

Recommendations:

“The workshop was awesome for so many reasons. It was a history lesson (both of the personal experiences of Tsimka and family and the law making/procces of colonialism), a realistic picture of how colonialism works today and how we as settlers are gears in its function, and it gave us tangible tools for personal and external work. I have learned about these things before but never in such a comprehensive way where history, action and emotional process are tied together. The workshop had playful elements and sent us off feeling ready to dive into the work. I felt a sense of responsibility and greater readiness to take the next step and understanding of where to look for guidance. It is like an energy bomb of all the basic tools you need to get started with the work of decolonization.”

“Tsimka and Jeanette’s workshop reprogrammed part of my brain which is truly incredible given that it was only 90 minutes. Before the workshop I believed in working toward just relationships but I didn’t know how to apply it in my life. Now I not only have tools and resources but I see the world through a different lens. I understand Land Back in a new way, how to move in that direction and it’s changed how I think and talk about the world.”

What do we talk about in ‘Pathways’?

We begin by welcoming attendees into our friendship and affirm that we’re all here because we’re curious about pathways from settler colonialism to Indigenous Sovereignty and would like to live in a more just and loving world. Our aim is to assist participants in broadening their understanding of settler colonialism, provide some tools for action, and leave them feeling empowered, inspired, and connected to our collective responsibilities for transformation.

History & Current Context: Once grounded, Tsimka shares stories from her family and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and I lay out the history & founding legal documents of Canada. Together we show the different world-views colliding and continuing to be at odds. By looking at these documents, which are still part of the legal framework of Canada, the racist & dehumanizing relationship between the Canadian state and Indigenous people and governments becomes clear.

Settler Colonialism: Gounded in history and legal documents, we look at what is settler colonialism, how is it created and how does it use non-Indigenous people to accomplish its aims. From here, with an awareness of our present context we shift to looking at where do we go from here and what can we do, individually and collectively.

Transformation & Belonging: Tsimka shares a traditional story about transformation, fear of change, & how the other side of change can be belonging and connection. Through this story we cross a bridge from painful truths into collective action and responsibility.

Caring Action: We share asks from Indigenous communities that support non-Indigenous folks to move towards right relationship with Indigenous people, communities and Nations. We invite participants to consider their skills and unique gifts, where they can be of service, & what their next steps are. We provide a booklet with resources and encourage folks to stay connected so we can support and amplify each others efforts.
